I totally agree! I'm from Spain, living in London. Our Fintech Startup is registered in London, and soon, our Subsidiary will be in Texas, US.

Really well articulated blog. Having an investment and business foot on both sides of the "pond" I can attest to these differences first hand. But a question, how much do you believe pay (and thereby attraction of talent) plays into this dynamic? European start ups just aren't willing or able possibly to pay the level of compensation that US start ups offer.

Great point, and stock based compensation levels are also quite different across geos.

Good post as always. How do you fix this if the mindset hypothesis is the most salient issue?

Great qn! Some suggest that media can play a role here -- from McKinsey: "sentiment analysis of media coverage has shown, for example, that only about 17 percent of press coverage in Germany portrays entrepreneurship in a positive light, as compared with 39 percent in the United States."

Such a big disparity exists between the US and the EU. Thank you for sharing your perspectives on the startup ecosystems from both sides.

Correlation is not causality.

People from Europe who want to do startups move to the USA.

Also the universities are better etc.

I'm more concerned about jobs. Are there good quality jobs or not spread evenly? Well guess what in Europe it's fine and things work.

There are more tech jobs in Czechia than you can imagine. Also universities are free and healthcare excellent.

Most of the startups are not that relevant. Spotify... We would be better without them...

Things that matter are usually build by people from around the world. And yes, more In us than in Europe. But then look at the backend - India!

Yes we regulate. So what. Do you want unregulated hyperscaler algorithimizing your politics? I don't.

Btw EU has the same number of bureaucrats as Paris, France. Check that...

Innovation is hard, even on the regulatory front. Case in point: https://thehackernews.com/2025/01/eu-commission-fined-for-transferring.html
